Container Shortage & Oversized Cargo Handling

Manager in focus : Meenakshi Sea Export

Background & Challenge

Case Study 1 Elongated

In the complexities of sea export logistics, sometimes even the best-laid plans face constraints in equipment availability. Such was the case when one of GSI Cargo’s clients needed to ship goods in a 40’ Open Top (OT) container due to cargo height and handling requirements. However, the shipping line’s inventory was tight: only 40’ Flat Rack (FR) containers were available. The client, initially unwilling to deviate, insisted on 20’ containers — which would not accommodate the cargo dimensions.

This posed a serious logistical challenge:

  • 20’ containers would require multiple units, increase handling costs, and complicate load balancing.
  • 40’ OT was the ideal fit, but unavailable due to inventory shortages.
  • The client worried about over-dimension issues, extra charges, or shipping delays.

In short: we needed a solution that balanced equipment availability, cost efficiency, and client confidence.

Strategy & Actions Taken

  • Negotiating Container Allocation

Our operations team engaged closely with the carrier and agents, advocating for conversion of the client’s 20’ bookings into full 40’ allocations. This required persuasion and clear justification — showing how using a 40’ unit made more sense overall. • Suggesting a 40’ Flat Rack Alternative

We proposed a switch from 40’ OT to 40’ Flat Rack (FR). While OT is ideal for open-top needs, FR can handle overhang and odd-shaped cargo with proper lashing and bracing. We explained the cost advantages, structural feasibility, and the trade-off between minor extra packaging vs. multiple 20’ units. • Dimensions & Fitment Assurance

To build trust, we ran precise dimension checks (L × W × H) and created mock fitment diagrams. We shared these with the client to demonstrate how the cargo would sit in the flat rack safely, including lashing plans. Multiple rounds of discussion resolved concerns about overhang, securing, and safety. For similar engineering-based cargo movements, explore our Air Freight Services and Customs Clearance Solutions.

  • Transparent Cost & Risk Sharing

We maintained full transparency about costs (lashing, special permits if needed, risk margins) so the client understood what they were paying for. In parallel, we developed contingency plans for fallback — in case the FR option was refused by customs or terminal, we had alternate booking options ready. Our Multimodal Transport Services ensure flexibility, compliance, and continuous cargo movement across global routes.

Outcome & Benefits

  • The shipment was successfully executed using a 40’ Flat Rack container.
  • Equipment utilization was optimized — fewer units, fewer handling events, lower cost per unit.
  • The client appreciated GSI’s proactive coordination, technical clarity, and risk-mitigated approach.
  • Post-shipment, the client engaged GSI for follow-on exports, citing trust in our operational problem-solving.
